Pregnant Wife Stabbed to Death after New Year’s Celebration Argument in Buriram

The wife was 2 months pregnant.

When: January 1st, 2021

Where: Ban Yan subdistrict, Buriram

Perpetrators: Mr. Watchara

Victims: Ms. Kannika, alias Dent, 32

What: A 32 year old woman, Ms. Kannika was going to celebrate the New Year countdown with a friend. Her husband, Mr. Watchara, was not invited. A violent fight followed with the wife slapping his face, hitting him in the head with a beer bottle, and the husband following the attack by stabbing his wife in the heart. After the attack, Mr. Watchara drove from the scene to his home and hugged a photo of his wife in regret.

Sadly, the wife was 2 months pregnant with her husband’s child, and nobody knew. Ms. Thongphian Yailert, 55, mother of the deceased Ms. Kannika told reporters that the couple had been together for 2 years.

The village headman said that at about 1AM on January 1st, 2021, Mr. Watchara told other local residents about what had happened. He then took a rest at home and later surrendered himself to police.

The incident happened at 11:45PM on December 31st, 2020. Mr. Watchara took his wife to celebrate the countdown at a house owned by his wife’s friend. A party of five from the house decided to do the countdown at an entertainment venue in the city, but Mr. Watchara was not invited. This is the motive for the fight and eventual stabbing.

Mr. Watchara was reportedly intoxicated. After his wife slapped him and hit him with a beer bottle, he stabbed her in the heart with a knife. She collapsed in front of her friend and died shortly after.

Mr. Watchara then drove home and hugged a photo of his wife in regret of what he’d done. He surrendered himself shortly after. He only learned after his wife’s death that she was two months pregnant. It was going to be a surprise for after New Year.

My take: Two questions come up for me in this story. Who else besides the deceased knew that Ms. Kannika was pregnant?

And if alcohol wasn’t involved, would this have ended as tragically as it did?
