Four Injured in New Year’s Eve Explosion near “Yangon Mob” Protest in Bangkok; Explosive Recovery & Destruction Unit Sent to Scene

The explosive recovery unit has collected evidence and is investigating. The protest was organized around the shrimp farmers that have been affected by COVID19.

When: December 31st, 2020

Where: Talat Yot subdistrict, Phra Nakhon district, Bangkok

Perpetrators: Unknown

Victims: Seven injured

What: Chanasongkram metro police received a report of an explosion at 11:35PM on New Year’s Eve. The incident happened at a parking lot in Bangkok’s Talat Yot subdistrict.

Investigators went to the scene at 12:10 AM on January 1st. The explosion happened beside a blue pickup truck. The explosives recovery and destruction unit (EOD) was sent to the scene. There were four minor injuries of a woman and man riding a motorbike in the area; they were taken to a Bangkok hospital. A police officer was also injured and taken to a police hospital, another officer had an injury but decided not to go to the hospital.

Nails and pieces of plastic pipes were found at the scene and EOD has collected the evidence to investigate.

My take: The scene is described as being related to a protest of Burmese people. I will be very curious who is identified as the culprit in this case. It is a developing story and we will update as reports come in.
