Net Idol Sia Po (เสี่ยโป้) Busted in Bangkok for Illegal Online Gambling Operation; Rise to Fame Tied to Knowledge of High Profile Crimes

The bad-boy rose to fame from the karaoke girl murder case in Khon Kaen.

When: February 4th, 2021

Where: Phasi Charoen district, Bangkok

Perpetrators: Mr. Apirak Chatchanon, alias Sia Po Po Anon, 28

Victims: Gambling addicts

What: On the morning of February 4th, 2021, police special operations unit “Hanuman Sheriff” shut down an illegal online gambling operation led by Sia Po, 28, an internet celebrity who rose to fame by having knowledge of high profile crimes in the media.

The raid happened at a commercial building in the Phasi Charoen district of Bangkok. There were 25 Burmese workers detained in the raid, along with another Thai and friend of Sia Po, Mr. Patcharaphon Chansawang. A firearm was seized from the friend.

Full details of the online gambling operation weren’t available at the time of this report. But the background of Sia Po may be of interest to readers.

He was born in a family that owns a garment factory. He rose to fame by being a mediator in high profile crime cases in the media. He would post inside knowledge of the cases on social media and rose to fame this way.

He led a “bad boy”, flashy lifestyle: lambos, lots of money, and girls. But he had a habit of donating money to flood victims in Isaan and other social causes that curried favor and goodwill from his fans.

The source of his money was always unclear. When asked, Sia Po would say that he had a business selling supplements online for men and that he invested in a casino abroad, which wasn’t illegal.

He was involved with several high profile cases that involved everything from big headline grabbing lawsuits, police raids on suspect killer’s homes, but especially in the case from Khon Kaen that hit headlines in the English language media for its brutality: “The Dismemberment of Preaw” case.

A karaoke girl’s body was found cut into two in May 2017. Several of the woman’s co-workers from the karaoke bar were sentenced to decades in prison for the murder. The motive was, of course, a love triangle.

Our man Sia Po was in contact with one of the main suspects in this case, sending regular messages to her and posting them online. He built a massive following this way of well over 1 million fans.

When more details about the gambling operation are released, we will update the story.

My take: I very well might do a background story on Sia Po. When I read the headline today about this raid, I thought he was just another schmuck out there running an online casino.

But when I started looking at what he’s been involved in, the cases he’s been associated with, he seems like a pretty interesting guy and might be a door to enter the modern world of Thai true crime as followed and understood by average Thais.
