The target was the soldier’s ex-girlfriend. Instead, he shot her sister-in-law.
When: February 6th, 2021
Where: Tha Muang district, Kanchanaburi province
Perpetrators: Mr. Amonthep, 31
Victims: Ms. Chaniporn, 23
What: On the evening of February 6th, 2021, police in Kanchanaburi responded to a call that a 23 year old mother, Ms Chaniporn, had been shot at a beauty salon. Officers found her on the ground with a bullet wound in the back. She was shot while holding her 2 month old baby. The two were taken to a local hospital.
The gunman was Mr. Amonthep, a soldier at a local military base in Kanchanaburi. He initially came to the shop looking for his ex-girlfriend, Ms. Pantana Ying, a 27 year old shopkeeper. They’d just broken up 1 week prior due to Mr. Amonthep’s physical abuse.
Mr. Amonthep tried to reconcile the relationship. He threatened both her and her family and his actions were erratic in the week leading up to this incident. He had broken into a beauty salon and harassed Ms. Ying several times at work. Police had scheduled a mediation session on February 10th.
Ms. Ying was eating dinner with her brother and sister-in-law and that couple’s 2 month old child when Mr. Amonthep fired his gun into the salon. He fled the scene on motorbike quickly after.
The 23 year old Ms. Chaniporn was shot in the back while trying to flee the shooting. She was holding her baby when struck by the bullet. She is expected to survive her injuries and the baby was not injured.
Police are searching for Mr. Amonthep now.

My take: This is one of those stories that could have turned out horribly tragic. And for what? A breakup?
I wonder how big the slap on the wrist will be for Mr. Amonthep. Do you reckon 500 baht?
