Happy to report there were no injuries or deaths.
When: January 15th, 2021
Where: Tha Sai subdistrict, Nonthaburi province
Perpetrator: Mr. Natchanon, 31
Victims: Just the residence; no deaths
What: At 3AM on January 15th, 2021, police in Nonthaburi received a call of a fire that was burning at a 10 room residence for the blind. Fire trucks and police rushed to the scene and found the 1 story residence burning. Firefighters used three trucks to combat the blaze for about 30 minutes before the fire was out. The entire residence was damaged along with Toyota taxis nearby.
One neighbor to the residence, Mr. Narong, 44, said that he was sleeping with his wife and kid when he heard a loud bang. He went out and saw the fire burning and shouted for help. The fire was burning very quickly and he got his wife and son out of the room.
Mr. Narong then helped the blind and elderly in the building to get out. Four people were taken out of the building and locals helped other blind people out of the room. They were all safe at the end of the incident.
Another tenant, Ms. Chutimont, 27, and his ex-girlfriend, said that Mr. Natchanon, the culprit, had visited her. They’d been dating for 3 years previous but he was caught cheating 1 week prior with another woman. He came in a drunken state to reconcile with her, but she refused and said she already had another boyfriend.
Investigators found Mr. Natchanon at his mother’s noodle shop in Nonthaburi. He was drunk, hadn’t slept, and had been crying. He confessed that he went to talk to Ms. Chutimont the day before. He then learned about the new byoyfriend, was angry, and used a lighter to set fire to a mosquito net in her room. He then fled the scene.
Officers are charging him with setting fire to property with residents and he was brought to the Rattanathibet police station in Nonthaburi pending further charges.

My take: This could have been a horrific tragedy if people hadn’t woken up and got the blind and elderly out of the building. What a completely selfish thing to do. Tragedy averted but I hope this guy gets more than a slap on the wrist.
