When: January 4th, 2021
Perpetrators: Mr. Chaiyo Charoenwai
Victims: 8 year old girl; 7 year old boy
What: Social media lit up with shares of a CCTV photo of a man who kidnapped a 7 year old boy and 8 year old girl in Bangkok. The kidnapping happened at around 2PM on January 2nd, 2021. The arrest took place by Chana Songkhram police on Sunday night, January 3rd, 2021 near Sanam Luang by the Grand Palace in Bangkok.
The kidnapper was caught on CCTV footage at a convenience store with the young boy and girl. There were many mosquito bites on his body and he looked tired.
The father of the kids, Mr. Wirote Wongamart, said that their grandmother is a vendor on Sukhumvit Soi 50. The kids were visiting with her then walked across to a shopping mall. When the stores closed, the grandmother was worried as the kids hadn’t returned yet. That’s when the search for them began.
The father started at where the kids disappeared. Locals said they saw a man following the kids for 3 days before. Witnesses confirmed that they saw him with the kids. The father then shared CCTV footage on Facebook and was widely shared. By the next day on January 3rd, police were also involved in the search.
At around 11PM on January 3rd, a Facebook user sent a photo of a man to see if it was the kidnapper or not. The kids were seen at Charansanitwong Soi 34. According to witnesses, the kids were confused and hungry at that time.
Another Facebook user then sent a photo of the kids at the Royal Navy Pier. At around that time, police announced that they’d apprehended the kidnapper.
The kids have been interviewed by police but there’s no information about whether the man harmed the children or why the children went with him. The parents are concerned that the kids were sexually assaulted.
The kidnapper, Mr. Chaiyo Charoenwai, was brought to the Phra Khanong police station for questioning at 3AM January 4th, 2021. He has a record for drug related cases.

My take: This is exactly why we do what we do!
Facebook and other social media is the new media. I am 100% convinced that the father sharing the photos on Facebook led to the capture of this bastard.
Glad that the kids were found and we hope that they were not harmed in any way.
