A near murder suicide over 5,000 baht. Life is cheap in Thailand.
When: November 23rd, 2020
Perpetrator: Husband, unknown
Victims: Wife, pregnant, unknown; 3 month year old fetus
What: Police responded to gunshots and found a bloody scene. One 45 year old male with a Norinco pistol in hand and two shells on the floor. He was in serious condition, as he’d shot himself twice – once in the temple, once in the hand. His wife, who was 3 months pregnant, was found with one bullet wound to the left breast. The motive? The wife asked husband to borrow 5,000 baht to give her mother. He didn’t want to give up the dough. They had an argument, which neighbors noted was common between the two, and the gunshots followed. Both husband and wife were taken to the hospital in critical condition.
My take: A happy wife is a happy life. The sum of 5,000 baht seems measly to most of us expats. But it’s just about half of the Thai monthly minimum wage. Did he shoot the old lady over 5,000 baht? Probably not. The two quarreled on the daily according to neighbors. He was sick of it and this was the easy way out. Now the question is, what happens once he regains his health. Did he buy himself a one-way ticket to the clink?
