Former army sergeant kills family, then turns .38 on himself; 5 dead

The army sergeant killed 5, his whole family and himself, in Bangkok.
The scene outside the luxury townhouse at Alicha Place 2, where the Sarge unloaded his .38

It’s lonely where this Sarge is going.

When: September 18th, 2020

Where: Bangkok, Thung Khru district

Perpetrator: Sgt Maj Anuwat Khlaiphayak

Victims: Wiphang Chumpaijit, wife of perpetrator; Pakhin Khlaiphayak, 9 year old son of perpetrator; Prawit Khlaiphayak, father of perpetrator; elderly mother of perpetrator

What: The former Sergeant Major and his family operated a motor oil and chemical business. The business had cash flow problems. The perpetrator asked friends to source money to cover business payroll in the lead up to the murders. He was seeking 200,000 baht for the payroll. The perpetrator walked into his home and shot his entire family dead. Then turned the gun, a .38 revolver, on himself.

My take: Money and business problems, possibly related to the economic downturn of COVID-19. And a whole lot of losing face. From the outside we’d think it mad to murder your mom praying to the Buddha, your father, your wife holding your 9-year old son. All over money problems? But this just goes to show what a man is capable of when desperate. Sad, sad all around.
