7 Year Old Boy Found Murdered at Banana Grove in Chiang Rai

The boy was an annoyance and was hit hard enough to kill him, according to the report.

When: January 19th, 2021

Where: Wiang Chiang Rung district, Chiang Rai province

Perpetrator: Unknown

Victim: 7 year old boy

What: On January 19th, 2021, police from the Wiang Chiang Rung district in Chiang Rai came to follow up on the discovery of a 7 year old boy at a banana grove in the same district.

Police at the scene found the corpse of the young boy along with a garden hoe, a pair of brown student shoes, child’s shoe footprints, a toy car, a cut banana tree, and a storage compartment about 50 meters from the scene. The location was far from the house and one would have to pass through mountains and rubber plantations to arrive there. It’s unlikely the boy got there on his own.

Officers leading the investigation said that they were still looking for motivation for the crime but that the cause was not expected to be complicated.

The boy’s body was found in an abused condition. According to the report, there were other children who may have witnessed the crime.

It’s expected that this case may be more difficult, in terms of its details for the general public, than the case of Nong Chompoo in Mukdahan a few months ago.

Police questioned the father and stepmother. DNA evidence has also been gathered and sent to a lab, and will take 2 days for results.

The village headman said that the he went to inspect the scene first. Footprints of at least three children were found not far from the body. The footprints all turned away from the body in the same direction, indicating they all fled together.

The cause, according to the report, is likely that the child was an annoyance. Somebody then struck the child, and the child died. But this is not fully confirmed yet.

My take: There are a few odd details in the report.

First, why were there other children around the dead body? Did they go there after the child died to look at the body, then got spooked and ran away?

It sounds like the police have a good idea who killed the child, but it doesn’t appear to be the father or stepmother, as they weren’t arrested.

The fact that it says the child was an annoyance and was hit too hard, to the point of death, is disturbing. You don’t just accidentally hit a kid too hard and kill them.

We will update the story as reports come in.
