The investigation into the matter starts tomorrow.

When: December 17th, 2020
Where: Isaan and South
Perpetrators: 514 hotels and restaurants
Victims: Tourism Authority of Thailand
What: The Royal Thai Police made an announcement that they are collecting evidence against 514 hotels and restaurants suspected of corruption. The charges include defrauding state money from the “We Travel Together” project. The Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailadn, Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, filed the complaint. Businesses in the northeast Isaan region and southern provinces are where the investigators are focusing.
According to the reports, the hotels would apply for funds from the program without having guests stay at the hotel. The same was for restaurants who did not have patrons dining according to what they claimed from the tourism agency.
The investigation team will start their work tomorrow, December 18th, 2020. The case will be the responsibility of the Suppression Division (BMA) and extend to provincial authorities.

My take: We will follow this story closely. As the investigation has just started there will be further updates in Thai press. Right now businesses are hurting across the country – but it doesn’t excuse the fraud.
