The perpetrators and victims reportedly knew each other well.
When: December 21st, 2020
Where: Prachathipat subdistrict, Thanyaburi district, Pathum Thani province
Perpetrators: Group of 20
Victims: 3 shot, 1 dead
What: Pathum Thani police received a call in the middle of the night on December 21st, 2020, about a shooting and multiple injuries.
The incident happened in front of a gated house. Investigators found a large pool of blood in front of the house. The front door was riddled with bullets, described in Thai as being shot until it looked “spongy” (เป็นรูพรุน – warning, Google Image searching this term is quite disconcerting).
The two who were shot are identified as Mr. Thawatchai Nilwan, 40, shot in the head, deceased; Navee Permpool, 39, shot in the abdomen; and Karupon Promsuwan, 40, who was slashed with an ax in the back of the head; Ms. Chatruedee Chan Khao, 34, who was shot in the abdomen and injured her left knee fleeing the gun fire.
A young woman who was witness to the attack stated that before the incident she was with the victims, who often get together as family and friends and drink together on a stone bench in front of the home. A mob of roughly 20 men (note: probably an unrealistic number) showed up in front of the house. One of the men approached the house, told everybody to stop what they were doing, and asked for Mr. Nilwan to come out of the house. The man threatened the group that “If he doesn’t come out, you will all die.”
The young woman stated that the mob then attacked the group. Mr. Karupon was slashed with an ax. Mr. Nilwan did not want to come out of the house, so the mob went to the back of the house to look for him. Mr. Nilwan then fled out the front of the house, and before he got past the front door, a group of the attackers fired several shots until he fell to the ground. Mr. Nilwan’s girlfriend was caught in the crossfire and was shot in the abdomen.
After the gun fire, the mob fled the scene in pick-up trucks and cars.
The witness also stated that she recognized one of the attackers as Mr. Bird, who used to drink with the group. But the day before, on December 20th, 2020, Mr. Bird got into a violent argument with Mr. Nilwan, but she didn’t know the nature of the fight. Mr. Bird is said to have crashed his truck into four cars parked on the street.
Investigators said that there are 7 men who they are looking for and that they haven’t established a motive in the attack. CCTV in the area is being looked at and witnesses are being questioned in the matter.

My take: The motive behind the attack seems to have developed over time. Whether that time spanned one day, as there was a fight the day before, or if it had its origin further back in time is yet to be determined.
We’d wager that there was a long standing conflict between the perpetrator and the victim. Of course the full details aren’t known by us yet, but we will follow up on the case when more reports come in.
