2 Arrested in Murder for Hire Plot in Pattaya

The murder happened July 2019; the hitmen were already arrested.

Police talk to one of the suspects. No masks!

When: December 8th, 2020

Where: Muang Pattaya School area 8, Soi South Pattaya 17, Moo 10, Nong Prue subdistrict, Bang Lamung district, Chonburi province (murder location)

Perpetrators: Mr. Thavorn, 53; Mr. Suphan, 53;

Victims: Mr. Pratum, age unknown

What: Police arrested two suspects who initiated and followed through with a murder-for-hire plot that was executed successfully on July 28th, 2019. On that morning last year, 2 males riding motorcycles shot down Mr. Pratum, who worked as a motorcycle taxi driver. The two gunmen were identifed as Mr. Manas, nickname Pan, 39, and Mr. Niphon, nickname Den, 45. Police arrested the gunmen two days after the initial homicide, booking them on July 30th, 2019.

But the story didn’t stop there. Relatives of the deceased Mr. Pratum lodged formal complaints to investigate the matter further. They were under the conviction that Mr. Pratum was killed in a murder-for-hire plot. They reportedly told police that the deceased has personal conflicts with many influential people in Pattaya.

Police investigated the claims on behalf of the family. They collected evidence and a trail of informants led them to Mr. Thaworn and Mr. Suphan. The police asked the court for a warrant for their arrest, which was granted. Police executed that warrant and arrested the two suspects on December 8th, 2020. Both suspects denied the charges. Prosecution is pending.

My take: A story like this bolsters my faith in the Thai justice system. Especially the aspect that considers victim’s family advocacy. Mr. Pratum petitioned police over a year after the initial murder because they probably had info that painted a different picture on who was actually behind his murder. Good on the Royal Thai Police in Pattaya for following through.
