19 Year Old PR Girl Brutalized by Loanshark over 130,000 Baht Debt in Khon Kaen

The loanshark paid a 1,000 baht fine and was released.

The nasty injuries.

When: December 14th, 2020

Where: Khon Kaen city

Perpetrators: Mr. Prae, 42

Victims: Ms. A (alias), 19

What: Police in Khon Kaen received a call on the afternoon of December 14th, 2020, about a brutal attack of a woman on a football field. Investigators found Ms. A, 19, laying on the ground, her whole body swollen, and her face badly bruised.

Ms. A told police that she borrowed upwards of 130,000 baht from Mr. Prae. She told him that she’d work as a PR girl, the type you see at promotional events and bars, and gradually pay back the loan. She also said that she was in a share group that went bust – a topic that we’ve covered before on True Crime Thailand – and this was the reason for the loan. She’d tried to pay Mr. Prae 5,000 baht and 10,000 baht installments, but he refused, demanding 15,000 – 20,000 baht per month from the girl.

Mr. Prae traveled up from Bangkok and met with the victim on a football field in Khon Kaen city. He hit her in the face with a BB gun several times. He also kicked her body and face while she was on the ground.

Mr. Prae cooperated with police initially and paid a 1,000 baht fine for “causing fear and shock”. Police said that because of the seriousness of the injuries, there will be further assault charges filed, but they have to wait a month to file them. And they will also investigate Mr. Prae’s loanshark operation, specifically the interest rate he charged, which if it’s higher than what the law allows, will prosecute him for this as well.

Ms. A went to the media because she said she’s fearful for her life and safety and is paranoid it will happen again.

My take: The report is very disheartening. First, the girl reported the assault to police and they let him go with a 1,000 baht fine. They had to be shown the seriousness of the injuries to take further action, which may or may not materialize. Second, Ms. A, the victim, told reporters that she did not want to skirt the loan or try to cheat Mr. Prae out of paying him back. The fact that she even has to say this after the brutal assault speaks volumes.
