Victims: 1 month old baby
What: On January 1st, 2021, Lamphun police were informed that a body of a baby was found abandoned in a grove near a river in the Wiang Yong subdistrict, Lamphun province.
The baby was found wrapped in a plastic bag. When the bag was opened, the corpse of the newborn was rotted and the gender was unable to be determined. The bag was estimated to be there for one week, according to reports.
Mr. Wiwat Sakorn, 57, found the baby. He worked in a nearby farm and spotted the bag in the grove. It was giving off a bad odor, and that’s when he called police to investigate.
Investigators said that the baby appeared to be at least 1 month old, but they were unable to identify the gender because of the condition of the remains. They are looking for the parent or relation to the baby.

My take: These stories are always difficult to read. Usually the baby is abandoned by a mother who doesn’t have the means to support the child and the family is unable to help.
There’s a lot of shame and secrecy around some pregnancies in Thailand. It’s an issue that deserves more coverage so that maybe one day mothers like this can get the help they need by the time they give birth, or they can receive more family planning education to prevent something like this in the future.
